Bit of an odd gaffe this, and I’m a bit late posting it here (I’m blaming my catastrophic headcold), but it seems EA made a bit of a mix-up when it came to national anthems in its FIFA Euro 2008 title.
MCV has got the jist of the article in the Londonderry Sentinel which originally carried the story. Essentially, instead of playing that rousing classic God Save Our Queen when playing as Northern Ireland in the game, players are treated to a rendition of the Soldier’s Song, a piece which in reality is only played at United Ireland games.
Needless to say, the community reaction has been vigorous – the Sentinel quotes one random Internet forum user who says “So Northern Ireland has no identity now I suppose.” National identity crisis indeed.
