New Review: World of Goo

October 21, 2008 by imperialcreed

As may have previously been mentioned (I forget, and can’t be bothered to look through the old posts), the chaps at Citizen Game asked me to come on do a spot of wordsmithing for them on a regular basis. Up until now it’s just been news editorial work, but today a new review of mine went live. It’s about World of Goo, and uses words like “charm” far too much.

You can find my 1,000 word exhultation here.

World of Goo is available direct from 2D Boy themselves, or on Steam. Savvy pre-orderers will be able to use their magic keys to register the version they got from 2D Boy with Steam.

World Of Goo Impressions

October 7, 2008 by imperialcreed

I’ve been playing World of Goo for about 2 hours now, having finally gotten my pre-order super special ultra slow download. I’ve been trying to come up with a couple of sentences to describe its appeal and its brilliance, and I can’t. Everything I start to write desolves into a rant that uses words like “sublime” and “transcendant” with a straight face. So instead, I’ve settled on the following:

Buy it. Buy it now.

Reviewed at Gamecell: Mercenaries 2

October 3, 2008 by imperialcreed

There are lots of explosions. That’s about it.

Explosions are the meat and potatoes of Mercs 2, and the developers understand this perfectly. They’ve provided you with everything from grenade launcher-armed SUVs to laser-guided bunker buster bombs, then sat back and said “go on, have a go.” It pays lip service to GTA and its clones with sandbox staples like hijackable vehicles, free roaming, plentiful side missions and the occasional fiddly race-against-the-clock challenges. But with a near fully-destructible environment and munitions liberally scattered across the Venezuelan countryside that you can collect and deploy with a couple of mouse clicks it’s quite clear where the game’s heart really lies.

The game manages to be tremendous fun and shockingly disappointing at the same time. Check the full piece here.

The State of Things

October 3, 2008 by imperialcreed

So, er, no updates in a while huh? There’s a lot of reasons for this, which won’t be enumerated here, but The Irish Gamers is not dead, and new content is coming down the pipe soon. It’s been over a month, and we’ve missed some pretty big stories, but thanks for checking in with us during the down time. Normal service will be up and running as soon as possible. We’ve both moved into the same house this week, so there’ll be no excuse not to collaborate properly on this here wee blog. Assuming Chorus ever get their ass in gear and hook up our internet, but that’s a rant for another time.

Around the web, you can still find me (Creed) over at The J-Server Podcast. The crew have been busy chucking out episodes at a steady rate. While I’ve been absent from a lot of their newer episodes due to work commitments, expect to hear some of my trademark vulgarity on the show soon enough.

I’ve also been lucky enough to start working with the chaps over at Citizen Game (you may recall we featured their podcast way back when). I’m now part of their news editorial team, with some reviewing thrown in for good measure. They may technically be the competition, but they’re a cracking bunch of guys and the site is improving by the day.

And still you’ll find me contributing to Gamecell in a review capacity.

As for The IPC? He’s just had his appendix out. Screw him.

THQ Know How To Do PR

August 21, 2008 by imperialcreed

How do we know this? Not content with pimping out upcoming Dawn of War 2 through the use of excellent CGI trailers and the confirmation of inclusion of Tyranids as a playable race in the game, they’ve only gone and done something that can only be called above and beyond when it comes to the call of PR duty.

They’re building a life size, working Rhino transport.

Built from the shell of a British FV432 armoured transport, the finished vehicle is set to debut at the Games Workshop Games Day in Birmingham this September 14th. While it won’t be carrying a squad of Space Marines, the company is outfitting the interior with high-end PC’s to demo the game to any who dare step inside.

Tim Curry, star of Red Alert 3 (Update 2, Full Cast List)

August 20, 2008 by imperialcreed

It’s the truth, if news coming out of the Leipzig Games Convention is to be believed. Kotaku reports that casting details for the new game were revealed at an EA press conference:

The leaders of the three factions — Allies, Empire of the Rising Sun and the Soviet Union — will be played by JK Simmons, George Takei and Tim Curry, respectively.

Which, to be frank, is all kinds of awesome. The cutscenes of the Command & Conquer series have always been a cheesy, B-movie-style highlight of the games, and casting an experienced scenery-chewer like Curry makes perfect sense. Oh, and EA are upping the hot chick quotient too, with the new inclusion of Jenny McCarthy as Tanya.

What’s more, Kotaku hints that Peter Stormare will at least be appearing in a cinematic trailer for the game. Peter-bloody-Stormare!

UPDATE: CVG have got even more details and a full cast list, bless ‘em. Here it is:

  • Gemma Atkinson (Hollyoaks)
  • Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Hunt for Red October)
  • Andrew Divoff (LOST)
  • Kelly Hu (X2, The Scorpion King)
  • Jenny McCarthy (Scream 3, former Playboy Playmate of the Year)
  • Ivana Milicevic (Casino Royale)
  • Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean)
  • J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Juno)
  • Autumn Reeser (The OC)
  • Peter Stormare (Prison Break, Armageddon)
  • George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes)
  • Randy “The Natural” Couture (former UFC Heavyweight champion)
  • Gina “Conviction” Carano (Undefeated Elite XC fighter, American Gladiators)

UPDATE 2: The hi-def trailer is now online here.

“You call that breaking my spine!?”

August 20, 2008 by imperialcreed

The Heavy Update for Team Fortress 2 has dropped (on time, for a change). For a free tweak to an existing game it’s a monster, and here’s the round-up of what’s included.

First, the Heavy unlockables - we have Natascha, a new version of the minigun that does 25% less damage but will slow enemies down for an instant when it hits. The Killing Gloves of Boxing are the new melee option. Killing an enemy with these gives the Heavy a five second crit-boost to use with any weapon. That’s five seconds of guaranteed critical hits, and it can be extended if the Heavy keeps on killing with them. It’s not much, but I can see it making all the difference in melee combat.

And then, last night, we were told about the Sandvich.
